National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) 2026–27: A practical guide for SC students across India
An overseas university offer can bring two very different feelings: excitement about your future and concern about the bill.
Before deciding how much to borrow, take a closer look at the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) for SC etc. Candidates. For eligible students, this Government of India programme can become an important part of an overseas education funding plan.
The first step is understanding the scheme before choosing your university, committing to a deposit or arranging your travel.
What is the National Overseas Scholarship?
Administered by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, NOS helps low-income students from specified communities pursue overseas Master’s and PhD studies. It is a national scheme, so eligible applicants are not restricted to Tamil Nadu.
The annual allocation is:
| Beneficiary category | Slots |
|---|---|
| Scheduled Castes (SC) | 115 |
| De-notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes | 6 |
| Landless Agricultural Labourers and Traditional Artisans | 4 |
| Total | 125 |
30% of awards are earmarked for women. Selection and funding remain subject to scheme conditions.

Eligibility and funding at a glance
The official 2026–27 guidelines specify:
| Item | Requirement or benefit |
|---|---|
| Academics | At least 60% or equivalent in the qualifying degree |
| Age | No more than 35 on 1 April of the selection year |
| Family income | Up to ₹8 lakh annually; prescribed family definition applies |
| First-round admission | Unconditional offer from a QS 2026 Top-500 university; campus-specific ranking matters |
| Annual maintenance | US$15,400 outside the UK; £9,900 in the UK |
| Annual contingency | US$1,500 outside the UK; £1,100 in the UK |
| Other support | Actual tuition, visa fees, medical insurance and eligible airfare, under scheme rules |
| Maximum funded duration | Master’s: three years; PhD: four years, or sanctioned course duration if shorter |
Bachelor’s courses are excluded. Selection prioritises university ranking, with academic marks breaking ties; a state cap applies. Second-round ranking provisions require careful checking.
For US study, the guidelines require J-1, excluding F-1 applicants. They also require return to India within 30 days of completion and at least one year’s stay, subject to permitted exceptions. Bonds and sureties apply. Previous overseas study/stay, repeat qualifications and other scholarships can affect eligibility.

Is NOS a fixed ₹36 lakh scholarship?
Do not use the Tamil Nadu scholarship’s ₹36 lakh headline for this scheme. NOS has its own expense and allowance structure, shown above. Build a funding estimate for your chosen course rather than treating the scholarship as a guaranteed lump sum.
The Ministry routes funds through Indian Missions abroad, which arrange payments to universities and students according to the sanction. Applicants should therefore discuss payment timing, deposits and any temporary funding needs before making commitments.

What the 2026–27 results tell students
The first-round result notice, dated 31 July 2026, records:
| Outcome | Candidates |
|---|---|
| Applications received | 514 |
| Placed in the selected list | 125 |
| Eligible but not selected | 141 |
| Rejected | 248 |
The notice explains that selection is provisional, pending original-document verification and other formalities. Rejections included unmet eligibility requirements and incomplete applications.
For a student, the lesson is practical: qualifying for consideration and securing an award are separate stages. A complete application deserves as much attention as the university offer.

Are applications open now?
The published first-round window ran from 24 April to 2 June 2026, followed by a corrections-only period from 4 to 7 June. That window has ended.
As of 7 October 2026, this article does not confirm a currently open second-round window. A results announcement is not an invitation for new applications. Check the latest dated official notice before applying.
Start at the Ministry’s NOS page and follow its current application link. The Ministry lists nosmsje.gov.in. Applicants may also encounter the dosje.gov.in sign-in page; confirm the route against current Ministry instructions if a link fails.

How to prepare before the next application window
Think of preparation as three connected tasks.
First, review your profile. Write down your completed qualifications, academic results, family circumstances, employment history and any earlier overseas study. Discuss anything uncertain before assuming eligibility.
Next, review your university shortlist. Compare the course’s academic fit and career value alongside the scholarship requirements. Keep a copy of the offer and check that the university name, campus, course and intake are consistent across your records.
Then, organise your evidence. Use the official guidelines’ Annexure I and the live application form as your checklist. Keep clear scans, readable filenames and originals ready. Make a separate list of anything that needs correction, renewal or clarification.
Before submitting, check every field against its supporting document. Save the acknowledgement and monitor the official communication channels for follow-up requests.
Haneeva tip: Create a funding plan with two scenarios—one if the scholarship is approved and one if it is not. This helps you decide which admissions commitments you can comfortably make.
