Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship 2026 (Formerly Prabuddha Overseas Scholarship) – Karnataka | Eligibility, Benefits & Application

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship Karnataka 2026: Study Abroad Scholarship Guide for SC Students

Planning to study abroad from Karnataka but worried about the cost of international education?

For eligible students, the Government of Karnataka's Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship can provide significant financial assistance toward pursuing higher education at leading universities overseas.

Previously widely known as the Prabuddha Overseas Scholarship, the overseas education initiative is now referred to as the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship. The scheme is administered through the Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka. The current government portal itself displays the new scholarship name.

For students planning higher education abroad, this can be an extremely valuable opportunity—but eligibility depends on factors such as category, university ranking, admission status, family income and other conditions laid down by the Government.

This guide from HANEEVA Overseas Education explains the scholarship, eligibility requirements, financial assistance, eligible universities and courses, documents and application process in simple terms.

Important: Scholarship rules, financial limits and application procedures can be revised by the Government. Students should always verify the latest notification and guidelines on the official Karnataka Social Welfare Department portal before making financial or admission decisions.

What is the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship?

The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship, Karnataka is an overseas education assistance programme intended to enable eligible students from Karnataka to pursue higher education at recognised, highly ranked universities outside India.

Students searching online may still encounter the older name:

Prabuddha Overseas Scholarship / Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship

The newer name being used for the programme is:

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship

A recent third-party scheme database also records the renaming from the Prabuddha Overseas Scholarship to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship.

For the latest rules, however, students should rely primarily on the official Karnataka Social Welfare Department scholarship portal rather than older blogs or scholarship listings.

---

Who Can Apply for the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship?

One of the most important requirements is that applicants must satisfy the category and eligibility conditions prescribed by the Social Welfare Department.

The current government guidelines and portal should be treated as the final authority when assessing eligibility.

Karnataka domicile/residency

The scheme is intended for eligible students connected to Karnataka under the conditions prescribed by the Government.

Scheduled Caste eligibility

The current scholarship programme is targeted toward eligible Scheduled Caste (SC) students. Some older websites continue to describe the historical Prabuddha scheme as covering both SC and ST candidates, which is one reason students should avoid relying exclusively on old articles.

Admission to a qualifying foreign university

Simply planning to apply abroad is not enough.

The current official portal states that the applicant must obtain an:

Unconditional Offer Letter

from an eligible foreign university or institution.

This means students should normally work on their university admissions first and secure the appropriate admission offer before expecting their scholarship application to be considered.

---

Top 325 QS World Ranking Requirement

This is one of the most important points students need to understand.

According to the current official Karnataka Government scholarship portal:Applicants must obtain an Unconditional Offer Letter from a foreign university/institution placed within 325 in the QS Overall Global Ranking.

Therefore, choosing a university purely because it is affordable, popular or highly ranked for a particular subject may not necessarily make it eligible.

Students should specifically check the university's applicable QS Overall Global Ranking for the relevant scholarship cycle.

The government portal itself provides a link for checking the QS ranking.

A common mistake students make

A university might have an excellent subject ranking but a different overall global ranking.

Since the official wording refers specifically to the overall global ranking, students should verify this carefully before paying deposits or finalising a university solely on the assumption that the scholarship will cover it.

At HANEEVA, this is one of the first factors we recommend checking while shortlisting universities for scholarship-focused applicants.

---

Which Courses Are Eligible?

The Government guideline covers a broad range of academic disciplines.

The eligible study fields listed in the guideline include:

1. Engineering and Management
2. Pure Sciences and Applied Sciences
3. Agriculture Sciences
4. Medicine
5. International Commerce, Economics, Accounting and Finance
6. Humanities, Social Science, Fine Arts and Law

This makes the scholarship relevant to students considering programmes across STEM, business, finance, medicine, law, humanities and several other academic disciplines.

However, the specific course, level of study, university and admission must satisfy the applicable government guidelines.

---

How Much Financial Assistance Can a Student Receive?

This is where the scholarship can make an enormous difference to an eligible student's overseas education plans.

The government guideline provides different levels of financial assistance depending on the applicant's annual family income.

For applicants in the lowest prescribed income category, the guideline provides for 100% assistance under the applicable scholarship components, subject to the scheme's limits and conditions.

The guideline also contains separate assistance provisions for applicants in higher family-income brackets rather than treating every applicant identically.

This is an important distinction.

Don't interpret "100% scholarship" as unlimited funding

Students often see the words 100% scholarship and assume that absolutely every expense abroad will be paid without any upper limit.

That isn't the safest way to understand the scheme.

The actual financial support is governed by:

• family-income category,
• permitted expenditure,
• prescribed limits,
• course duration,
• university costs,
• Government rules, and
• documentary evidence.

Applicants should therefore calculate their expected university and living expenses against the current government sanction limits before making commitments.

---

What Expenses Can the Scholarship Support?

Subject to eligibility, limits and approval, the scheme can provide assistance toward major costs associated with overseas education.

These may include areas such as:

Tuition fees – assistance toward the tuition charged by the eligible overseas university.

Maintenance/living expenses – financial support toward living abroad, subject to applicable limits.

Books and academic expenses – eligible academic or related expenditure as prescribed under the scheme.

Visa-related expenditure – eligible visa costs may be considered according to the scheme.

Medical insurance – support for eligible insurance expenses.

Air travel – eligible airfare/travel assistance subject to the applicable conditions.

Older descriptions of the Prabuddha scheme also list tuition, maintenance allowance, medical insurance, books/miscellaneous expenses, visa fees and air passage among its benefits.

Students should nevertheless use the latest Government order applicable to their application rather than assuming historical monetary limits automatically continue for a new intake.

Documents Required for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship

Documentation is one of the most important parts of the application.

According to the government guideline, the application/documentation requirements include academic, identification, financial and university-related records. The guideline specifically refers to items including academic records, transcripts and an Unconditional Offer Letter from the foreign university.

Depending upon the applicant and current notification, students should be prepared with documents such as:

• Aadhaar Card
• PAN Card
• Valid caste certificate
• Income/family income documentation
• SSLC/10th academic records
• PUC/12th academic records
• Bachelor's degree documents, where applicable
• Previous qualification certificates
• Semester/year-wise marks cards
• Consolidated marks card, where applicable
• Academic transcripts
• Passport
• Unconditional Offer Letter from the eligible foreign university
• University fee structure
• Course details
• Income Tax Return documents, wherever applicable
• Parents'/family income-related records
• Bank-related information
• Admission-related documents
• Relevant test score reports, wherever applicable

The official scholarship portal additionally provides a dedicated “Required Documents” section and a prescribed family-income affidavit/certificate format. It specifically warns that the family-income information entered in the application must match the details declared in the affidavit.

That matching requirement is particularly important: inconsistencies between the online form, income records and affidavit can create avoidable problems during verification.

---

Is GRE, GMAT, IELTS or TOEFL Mandatory?

This is an area where applicants should be careful with older online information.

Older scholarship listings frequently state that applicants must clear GRE, GMAT, TOEFL or IELTS. For example, older third-party descriptions still reproduce this requirement.

The uploaded Government guideline also refers to standardised/language tests such as GRE, GMAT, IELTS and TOEFL in its conditions.

However, students should check the latest applicable notification and their particular university/course circumstances rather than assuming that every applicant needs every one of these examinations.

For example, the entrance requirements for an MBA, MSc Engineering and Humanities Master's programme can be very different.

How to Apply for the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship

The application should be made through the official Karnataka Government system.

A sensible process for prospective applicants is:

Step 1 – Check basic scholarship eligibility

Confirm your category, Karnataka eligibility, academic background, family-income conditions and intended level of study.

Step 2 – Select eligible universities

Shortlist foreign universities that satisfy the applicable ranking requirement.

Do this before applying randomly to universities.

Step 3 – Apply for university admission

Complete the foreign university application process with the required academic documents, SOP, LORs, test scores and other programme-specific documents.

Step 4 – Obtain the Unconditional Offer Letter

The current government portal expressly requires an Unconditional Offer Letter from an eligible top-325 institution.

Step 5 – Prepare scholarship documentation

Collect your caste, income, academic, passport, university and financial documentation.

Step 6 – Complete the online application

Apply through the official Karnataka Social Welfare Department overseas scholarship portal.

Step 7 – Upload documents carefully

Check spelling, Aadhaar information, income details, academic records and university information before final submission.

Step 8 – Government verification

Applications and supporting documents are subject to verification and scrutiny by the concerned authorities.

Step 9 – Complete further formalities

If selected, complete any additional documentation, undertaking, verification or financial formalities required by the department.

---

Can You Apply After Already Going Abroad?

Students should not assume that travelling abroad first and applying later will automatically be acceptable.

The guideline contains detailed conditions concerning documentation, admission, travel and disbursement. For example, its travel-related provisions refer to records including the I-20/visa/passport/boarding pass and university-related documents, depending on the case.

Because timing can affect eligibility and disbursement, students should ideally clarify their scholarship position before making irreversible travel or financial decisions.

---

How Long Can Financial Assistance Continue?

The Government guidelines prescribe maximum periods of assistance depending on the level/course.

Accordingly, funding is not simply indefinite for as long as a student remains abroad.

Students must maintain the required academic progress and comply with the scholarship conditions throughout the period of assistance.

This is another reason applicants should understand both the course duration and the maximum scholarship-supported duration before choosing their programme.

---

Is the Old Prabuddha Overseas Scholarship Closed?

This question creates considerable confusion online.

A recent third-party page labels the old Karnataka Prabhuddha Overseas Scholarship Scheme as “permanently closed.” On the same page, however, it explains that the Government renamed the programme as the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship Scheme.

Meanwhile, the official Karnataka Government foreign-studies portal is currently live and identifies the programme as:

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship

Therefore, students searching for “Prabuddha Scholarship 2026” should look for current information under the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar International Scholarship rather than concluding from an old scheme name that Karnataka's overseas scholarship opportunity no longer exists.

---

Common Mistakes Students Should Avoid

A strong scholarship application starts much earlier than filling in the government application form.

Common mistakes include choosing a university without checking its qualifying overall ranking, applying only for conditional offers, relying on outdated Prabuddha Scholarship articles, inconsistencies in family-income documentation, incomplete academic documents, incorrect caste/income certificates, paying large university deposits before understanding scholarship eligibility, and waiting until the visa stage before checking scholarship requirements.

One particularly important issue is the Unconditional Offer Letter requirement. The official portal currently makes this explicit.

How HANEEVA Overseas Education Can Help

Applying for an overseas scholarship is not merely about completing one application form.

The university itself has to be suitable for your academic profile and satisfy the scholarship requirements.

At HANEEVA Overseas Education, Bengaluru, we can assist students throughout the study-abroad journey, including:

• Profile evaluation
• Scholarship eligibility guidance
• Country and university shortlisting
• Checking university ranking requirements
• Course selection
• University applications
• SOP and LOR guidance
• Documentation support
• Offer-letter follow-up
• Scholarship application guidance
• Education-loan assistance
• Visa documentation and filing
• Pre-departure guidance

For scholarship-focused students, university selection is especially important. Receiving admission from a university that does not satisfy the Government's scholarship conditions can leave the student with an offer letter but no eligibility for the intended funding.

Our approach is therefore to consider the admission strategy and scholarship strategy together.
