UK Visitor Visa for Parents: Complete Guide to Attending Your Child's Graduation in the UK
Planning to attend your child's UK graduation? Explore UK visitor visa documents, bank balance requirements, sponsorship, costs and application steps.

Watching your child graduate is a proud family milestone. If you are travelling from India to attend a UK ceremony, start with the right visitor route, a realistic budget and evidence that reflects your circumstances. This guide covers parents, retired applicants and accompanying siblings.
At a glance: there is no separate graduation visa and no fixed minimum visitor-visa bank balance. Each traveller needs an individual application where a visa is required. An invitation or sponsorship does not guarantee approval.
Which UK visa should parents apply for?
Indian passport holders attending a child's graduation will generally need a Standard Visitor visa. This route covers family visits and other permitted short activities, usually for up to six months. State the trip you actually plan—for example, ten days—not the longest stay the route allows.
This is a temporary visit, not a route to live in the UK. Check your circumstances using GOV.UK before applying.
Graduation invitation and documents from your child
A graduation invitation letter from the university, ceremony confirmation or guest-ticket information can explain the occasion. Ask the university what it provides. A special graduation letter is not a universal requirement for every family visit.
- Graduation confirmation or ceremony details, where available.
- Your child's personal invitation, with visit dates, relationship and proposed accommodation.
- Relevant student-status confirmation, passport copy and evidence of lawful UK immigration status.
- Relationship evidence, such as a birth certificate, where relevant.
- Your child's UK address and contact details.
An invitation explains the visit; it does not prove that every visitor requirement has been met.
UK visitor visa documents from India: a practical checklist
Your passport or travel document must be valid throughout your UK stay. The remaining evidence depends on your circumstances: the list below is a planning aid, not a universally mandatory bundle. Follow the current application instructions and official supporting-document guidance.
Identity, purpose and proposed arrangements
- Current passport and relevant previous travel or immigration history.
- Application and appointment information.
- A concise explanation of the visit, dates, planned accommodation and funding.
- Relevant graduation and family-relationship evidence.
Funds and personal circumstances
- Bank statements showing accessible funds and their origin.
- Relevant salary, pension, business or rental-income records.
- Fixed-deposit or investment information where ownership and access can be explained.
- Evidence supporting your actual employment, studies, retirement or household circumstances.
- Sponsor evidence if another person is meeting stated costs.
There is no universal rule requiring six months of statements or three years of Income Tax Returns for every visitor. Non-English or non-Welsh documents need an independently verifiable full translation meeting Home Office requirements. Flight bookings, hotel bookings and travel insurance are not useful substitutes for evidence of a genuine visit and finances; avoid paying for travel before a decision.
How much bank balance is required?
UK visitor rules do not prescribe a single minimum balance. The assessment considers your available resources, usual commitments, planned expenses and genuine support. Explain significant recent credits with records. A high but unexplained balance is not a guarantee, and property ownership is not the same as money available for the trip.
Recent statements can help show your financial history. Do not temporarily borrow money simply to make an account appear stronger. See the official visitor caseworker guidance for the assessment framework.
Illustrative ten-day budget for two parents
This example from the planning document assumes two people sharing a hotel room. It is not a quotation, required balance or UKVI financial threshold.
| Expense | Illustrative cost |
|---|---|
| Return flights for two | £1,200 |
| Hotel: nine nights at £110 | £990 |
| Meals | £650 |
| Local transport | £200 |
| Sightseeing | £250 |
| Insurance and miscellaneous costs | £120 |
| Contingency | £300 |
| Total, excluding visa fees | £3,710 |
At an illustrative—not current—rate of £1 = ₹120, that equals ₹4,45,200. Replace every estimate with your own costs, check today's exchange rate, and add the current visa fee for each traveller. Student accommodation may prohibit overnight guests, so confirm the rules before relying on it.
Can retired parents apply without employment?
Yes. Retired parents can explain their pension, savings, accessible deposits and genuine family support. Retirement or being a homemaker does not itself determine the outcome. Describe your real financial and personal circumstances, including relevant commitments in India, rather than inventing employment or income.
Can a UK student sponsor parents?
A child studying in the UK may provide genuine support if they can afford the promised contribution alongside their own expenses and dependants. A student can invite parents without offering financial sponsorship. Be clear whether the visitor, student or another genuine sponsor will pay for flights, accommodation and daily costs.
Where sponsorship is used, explain the relationship, what is covered, the sponsor's available resources and lawful UK status where applicable. Sponsorship addresses funding; it does not remove the visitor's other requirements.

Contact HaneevaCan an unemployed or studying sibling attend?
A sibling can apply for the same family occasion, but must meet the rules individually. A student should explain current enrolment and academic commitments. An unemployed applicant should describe their actual circumstances and how the visit is funded. Do not invent job offers or rely on a claimed universal rejection percentage. Applicants under 18 have additional requirements: check the official guidance for their age.
Is previous international travel compulsory?
No. Previous compliant travel can form part of the assessment, but first-time travellers are not automatically ineligible. The application needs a credible overall account of the visit, finances and intention to leave.
How to apply: step by step
- Confirm the graduation date, guest arrangements and a realistic visit period.
- Prepare your budget and agree who will pay each cost.
- Gather relevant passport, financial, personal-circumstance and invitation evidence.
- Complete an individual GOV.UK visitor application for each traveller.
- Pay the applicable fee and follow the identity, document-upload and appointment instructions provided.
- Wait for the decision, then follow the instructions for accessing your immigration permission.
- Before departure, check your permission, passport details and travel arrangements.
You can generally apply up to three months before travel. GOV.UK currently lists three weeks for Standard Visitor decisions outside the UK, measured after the relevant identity and submission steps—not after you first start the form. Delays can occur; check current processing guidance and leave time before graduation.
Common application problems to avoid
- Funding that does not match the proposed trip or normal household commitments.
- Unexplained deposits or unsupported sponsor promises.
- Conflicting information across forms, letters and financial evidence.
- An unclear visit purpose or unrealistic plans.
- False information or omission of relevant facts.
A coherent application is more useful than a large, irrelevant document bundle.
Frequently asked questions
Can both parents apply together?
You can coordinate your plans, but each person needs their own application and fee where a visa is required.
Are ITRs compulsory for retired parents or homemakers?
They are not a universal requirement for every visitor. Provide relevant evidence that truthfully explains your resources and circumstances.
Can fixed deposits help show funds?
They may help where you can establish ownership and realistic access. An asset that cannot fund the trip should not be described as available cash.
Can the student sponsor only the hotel?
Explain that arrangement clearly and provide evidence for both the sponsor's contribution and the visitor's remaining expenses.
Must flights and hotels be prepaid?
No. UKVI advises not booking travel before a decision. Proposed arrangements should still be realistic.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
It is not a general Standard Visitor visa requirement. Suitable insurance may still be sensible for the trip; check the policy's cover and exclusions.
Does a long-term visa allow parents to live in the UK?
No. A two-, five- or ten-year visitor visa generally permits visits of up to six months at a time; frequent or successive visits must not become residence.
